The victory we have in Christ can be felt in our everyday life. We can overcome depression. We can overcome fear. We can be confident. We can be free from worry. We can be free from anxiety. We can have emotional healing. We can have hope. We can be set free from our past. The Bible declares the goodness of God. The Bible is more than Christian psychology it is truth. The truth of God brings mental health, spiritual health and physical health. We can walk in peace. We can overcome the traumas of life.

What you allow in your ears can rattle on for years in your heart, which is very important when it comes to what we have been told about who we are. I'm your host, Dennis Daubin. When it comes to what we've been told about ourselves, I have to ask the question, who told you that? Give a listen. Today's episode is entitled, Who Told You That? The title of my podcast is Yesterday Ended, Healing the Traumas of Life. I named it so to remind us all that it, yesterday, is over. It ended. The trouble with most of us is we have a good memory that holds on to the voices of the past. We listen to the failures of our past. We listen to the shame of our past. We listen to the condemnation of our past. Coming to the realization that God has transformed us through Christ is the beginning of our deliverance from the myriad of voices of the past. 2 Corinthians 5, verse 17. Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new. If old things are passed away, why are we listening to the echoes of past defeats? If old things are passed away, then the failures and traumas of our past should be gone. The voice of our past is the voice of the corpse of our old sinful nature. And if we're listening to it, we're living a horror story. I used to watch horror movies, but I don't anymore. I want a happy ending, and the gospel of Jesus Christ has a spectacularly happy ending, which we can start living today. The challenge that lies before us is who and what are we listening to? If the words in your ears are that your life is full of sickness, doubt, fear, and defeat, I'd have to ask you, who told you that? There's a voice in the air that's full of doubt. It's a voice that whispers, but sometimes it shouts. It tells you life is hopeless and there's no way out. But ask yourself, who told you that? In our heart abides everything we have ever heard. Lies cause confusion, and our hope becomes blurred. With caution we must listen and judge every word and ask ourselves the question, who told you that? There are voices in our heart that talk to us every day, one telling us the truth, or the other shades of gray. One tells us to worry, the other tells us to pray. So ponder what you hear and ask, who told you that? Our enemy is a liar, he is a slanderer, he's an accuser. On the other hand, we have the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost who tell us the truth. So who have you been listening to lately? And what words are bouncing around in your ears and heart? And ask yourself, who told you that? God has given us his word, and he asked us to obey it. In the garden, God gave Adam and Eve one commandment. Unfortunately, Eve got deceived, and Adam totally blew it. We pick up the record in Genesis chapter 3, verses 8 through 11. And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. We know from the rest of the Bible that God is invisible, he does not have a body, and I've always been amazed at this description. The voice of the Lord God was walking in the garden. The voice of the Lord is personified here. The Lord is visiting Adam and Eve after their call. But they're afraid and hiding. If you're hiding from God right now, stop it. He loves you. Go talk to him and see what he has to say to you. Back to the episode. Verse 9. And the Lord God called unto Adam and said unto him, Where art thou? I am amazed that some people actually use this verse to try to teach that God doesn't know everything. I think the question is directed to Adam in a way of getting Adam to consider what he has done. What have you been up to lately, Adam? But that's me putting a spin on the words. But I do not believe that God didn't know where Adam was. Verse 10. And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? Again, one could take this statement to try to prove that God does not have full knowledge. I think that's ridiculous. God knows what's going on. Anyway, here is where the title of this episode comes from. Who told you that? God told Adam, who would have told Eve not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve, unfortunately, listened to the serpent, and Adam listened to Eve. Genesis chapter 3, verse 17. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it. Cursed is the ground for thy sake, in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. It's not an issue of a man listening to a woman. It's an issue of listening to someone other than the Lord our God. Here we see the terrible consequences of not listening to God. But there are far different results when we do listen to him. Deuteronomy 28, verse 2. And all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. Whose voice are we listening to? Hearkening is more than just turning your ears towards God. We hear and obey. And when we hear and obey his blessings will come on us and overtake us. So what are we listening to? Unfortunately, sometimes there are reasons that stop us from receiving from the Lord, and usually they're not good reasons to begin with. Psalm 95, verse 7 and 8. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Today, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart, as in the provocation, as in the day of temptation in the wilderness. God delivered Israel from the land of bondage, from Egypt. It could have been an eleven day trip from Egypt to the promised land. Unfortunately, Israel turned back in their hearts to Egypt. They were looking at the circumstances they were in instead of looking to God, and their hearts became hardened. They were tempted and failed to turn to the Lord. They had seen the miracles God did in the ten plagues that afflicted Egypt, but not them, and yet they failed to trust in him when he delivered them from the terrible servitude they were in. They did not listen to God's voice. They didn't believe his words. Whose voice will we believe? Whose voice will we act upon? Nowadays, with cell phones and smart watches, we are never more than a heartbeat away from some voice other than God's. Consider the warning Jesus gave us. Mark chapter 4, verse 24. And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear. With what measure ye meet, it shall be measured to you, and unto you that hear shall more be given. This is a very simple warning to be careful what we listen to. How much you open your heart will determine what you get. Jesus warned the disciples about the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. A little bit of their doctrine can mess everything up. I have a friend who spends too much time on YouTube looking at videos that on the surface look like they're Christian. I watched a bit of one of the videos that he thought might be good. Mixed in with the name of Jesus and a couple Bible verses was a lot of error, very professionally put together, but absolutely wrong. We need to be very vigilant to know the voice of our Heavenly Father and of our Savior Jesus and of the Holy Spirit. Jesus spoke about this in John chapter ten, verses one through five. Verily, verily I say unto you, he that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter openeth, and the sheep hear his voice. And he calleth his own by name, and leadeth them out. And when he puteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him, for they know not the voice of strangers. Our enemy, the stranger, is very clever to disguise the lies that he's trying to get us to buy. We need to spend more time reading the word of God than other things. We need to have God's word hidden within our heart so that when the serpent tempts us, we will respond like Jesus did with, It is written. I knew an older gentleman years ago who, when his joints were painful from arthritis, he would say, Old Arthur is talking to me. Unfortunately, I didn't know the truth at the time to challenge such a declaration. Today, if I heard someone say that, I'd tell them to tell Arthur to shut up. I'd tell them to listen to the voice of truth. God's word says that by Christ's stripes we were healed. When we are challenged with physical illness, we unfortunately take the attitude that we're a sick person trying to get healed. The truth of the matter is we are a healthy person, the devil's trying to convince we're sick. So who are we listening to? The world will try to tell you you're defeated. The word tells you you're more than a conqueror. The world tells you you have a lot to be afraid of. The word tells you to fear not. The world will tell you you can never get ahead. The word tells us God will supply all your needs. So when things aren't going the way you'd like, or the way God says it should be, what is your response? What comes out of your mouth? What does your voice say? Consider what the psalmist said in Psalm 102, verse 5. By reason of the voice of my groaning, my bones cleave to my skin. Are we listening to the pain in our bodies, like my old friend and his unfortunate friend Arthur Idas? Our bodies and our circumstances and the world can use their voice to deceive us. Our past will try to pull us back into our fears and defeats. We need to be prepared to respond with the truth. The world is trying to conform us to its image, but if we renew our mind according to the truth, we can be transformed. We can become more Christ-like. We can walk in his power and authority because we're listening to his voice. It tells you life is hopeless and there's no way out. But ask yourself, who told you that? In our heart abides everything we have ever heard. Lies cause confusion, and our hope becomes blurred. Who told you that? Words are containers that bring good or evil. Words carry power. Words carry life or death. Proverbs 18, verse 21. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. We need to pay closer attention to what we listen to, as for me in my house, I will listen to the Lord.
